January is for Planning

Planning for the Year Ahead

January can be a slow time of year for gardening and landscaping, with the days still short and the temperatures low. Less time digging outside allows more time for planning. Keep yourself warm during this rainy season by thinking about your projects for the coming spring and summer. Are you going through stacks of seed catalogs for the annual garden? Are you cooking up plans for a bigger project for your outdoor space that include hardscapes like retaining walls and patios? Maybe you’re dreaming of a fire pit to enjoy in the evenings next summer.

Start Big Plans Now

For those bigger projects, late winter is the perfect time to start the design process. Starting now makes it more likely that you’ll be enjoying your new landscape this summer. If your project happens to require a permit from the city or lies inside an ECA, the planning can never start too soon. Our experience tells us that the Seattle’s current building boom has extended the review time needed for many projects before permits are issued. The process can take several weeks.

Smaller Plans Are Worthwhile

Not all great landscaping ideas involve major renovations and city inspectors, though. You might take the chance over the winter to see where your yard could use more plant interest next winter. Looking for weaker areas now will help you to make improvements that will add beauty and color year round.

No matter how large or small of a landscaping project you want to take on this year, January is the perfect month for dreaming up ideas and beginning plans to make them happen.
