In landscape design-build, at times, the unique combination of site elevations and specific requirements for subdivided lots can pose substantial landscaping challenges, particularly in urban environments where space is limited, and topography is demanding. Such was the case with this Seattle landscape construction and landscape design project, where a cluster of stunning homes was nestled into a steep hillside, surrounded by compact outdoor spaces that required careful planning and design to maximize their potential. Despite the constraints of limited space, these homes called for an exciting and cohesive landscape design that would not only enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the outdoor spaces but also harmonize seamlessly with the interior design of the homes.

Adding to the complexity, Seattle’s stringent on-site stormwater management regulations demanded innovative solutions to handle runoff effectively while preserving the integrity of the hillside. Furthermore, the need for all properties to align seamlessly with one another’s elevations created additional challenges, as the steep terrain required precise grading and thoughtful integration of retaining structures.

Faced with these multifaceted challenges, our team embarked on a dynamic landscape design-build project that pushed the boundaries of creativity and ingenuity. Playfully dubbed *Bumping Uglies*—a nickname coined by the builder to reflect the close proximity of so many units on the steep hillside—this project became an exercise in transforming a unique and complex site into a cohesive and visually striking landscape. The name, while lighthearted, underscored the intricate nature of the project, where the tight spacing and overlapping elements of the homes demanded an approach that blended functionality, artistry, and environmental sensitivity.

The resulting design was a testament to the power of collaboration and creative problem-solving. By carefully considering the interplay of elevations, outdoor spaces, and stormwater management, we developed a landscape that not only addressed the site’s challenges but also complemented the architectural character of the homes.
